The sea nettle, Chrysaora quinquecirrha,
is a jellyfish found off the East Coast, including in the Gulf of Maine.
The shallow-water species with a painful sting can grow up to 2 feet
long. It is one of many animals, living in intertidal to deep sea
habitats, studied by University of Maine Professor of Marine Science
Kevin Eckelbarger.
Eckelbarger, director of UMaine's
Darling Marine Center, Walpole, Maine, conducts research on the
reproductive biology of marine animals, such as jellyfish, mollusks,
worms and starfish.
