Every May term for 27 years, University
of Maine Associate Professor of Physical Education Walter Abbot has led
an outdoor leadership course that prepares students to meet the
challenges of coordinating wilderness trips and conducting outdoor
education classes. One of the learning environments is the West Branch
of the Penobscot River in northern Maine, where Mt. Katahdin in Baxter
State Park is the backdrop.
The emphasis is on leadership, safety
and liability in outdoor education, with students developing and
evaluating experiences beyond the classroom. Abbott's outdoor leadership
course is legendary, attracting a total of more than 2,000 majors and
non-majors in kinesiology and physical education through the years.
