The original art on the cover and
accompanying the related story on European fire ants is by scientific
illustrator Carrie Graham, who received her master's degree in
entomology in December from the University of Maine. Her thesis
addressed the funeral behavior of the invasive ants and their response
to fungal pathogens. Graham, originally from Ann Arbor, Mich., lives on
Mount Desert Island, where much of the fire ant research has been
focused. Graham has presented her research at several regional, national
and international entomology meetings. She received an honorable mention
in the 2005 Entomological Society of America student competition and was
the recipient of the UMaine Biological Sciences Department's 2006 Edith
M. Patch-Frank H. Lanthrop Prize in Entomology. In addition to
entomology, Graham is interested in illustration and museum exhibit
design. She has contributed to a number of environmental and
entomological outreach programs and exhibits. Graham continues to work
on UMaine's European fire ant research in Acadia National Park as a
part-time collaborator.
