Last fall, a third grade art lesson in the use of shades and tones in portraits yielded stunning original paintings at Frankfort Elementary School in Frankfort, Maine. Led by Nancy Desmond, the elementary art teacher for RSU 20, the youngsters in their weekly art class were asked to draw self-portraits, fold them in half and select one paint color to mix with black on one side to create shades and white on the other for tones.

UMaine Today magazine requested permission to publish the works of three of the young artists in the spring 2010 issue to illustrate the story, “Two Worlds.” Pictured with art teacher Nancy Desmond are the three third grade student artists from Frankfort Elementary: left to right, Breanna Brown, Damon Sauer and Mackenzie Rainey.
